Join NowWelcome to Millhouse Art Society
Millhouse Art Society is a vibrant, volunteer-run community of artists who encourage and support the practice of art. We are based in the heart of Milton at Millhouse Art Gallery—a light-filled creative space.
Members are invited to join our self-directed painting and drawing groups every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at the gallery. Throughout the year, we also offer workshops and demonstrations led by skilled member artists, providing opportunities to explore new techniques and expand artistic practice.
We’re proud to maintain an extensive library of art books for members to borrow, supporting ongoing learning and inspiration.
Millhouse Art Gallery Exhibitions
Millhouse Art Gallery hosts four seasonal exhibitions each year, with new artworks installed at the beginning of each season. Exhibitions are staffed by exhibiting members, who are always happy to welcome visitors and share information about their work.
From time to time, additional exhibitions are held at local venues, showcasing even more work from our talented members.
These exhibitions are a wonderful opportunity to enjoy local art and purchase original and affordable pieces created within the Shoalhaven community.
Membership
Millhouse Art Society offers a welcoming space to learn, exhibit, and connect with fellow artists. Membership is open to residents of the Shoalhaven Local Government Area, and new members are warmly welcomed—whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist.
As a volunteer-run organisation, members help the Society thrive in many ways: by joining the committee, assisting with smaller responsibilities, and staffing the gallery. Exhibiting members contribute their time to the gallery for three days per exhibition when exhibiting their artwork, which allows our community to meet and get to know our artists.
Members are invited to attend our General Meetings, held at 1pm on the third Monday of each month at the Millhouse Gallery, as well as our Annual General Meeting in August.
History
For more than five decades, Millhouse Art Society has fostered creativity, community, and artistic growth. We owe much to the founding artists for their vision and hard work in forming the Society.
The story began in April 1974, when nineteen art students gathered in the home of Jean Hill, a respected local art teacher. Inspired by their shared passion for learning and painting, they decided to form an art society—and Jean Hill became its first president.
Their first home was the former mill manager’s residence opposite Ulladulla Harbour, known as the Millhouse—the place that gave the Society its name.
After seven years, they reluctantly left the Millhouse to allow for construction of the new Civic Centre. The Society had some temporary homes—including a return to Jean’s place—before settling at Kendall Cottage in Ulladulla, where membership continued to grow. In 1995, the closure of the Milton TAFE allowed Millhouse Art Society to rent two rooms and transform them into a gallery and workshop. This creative hub remains the Society’s home today.
